Commercial Art is a two-year program which focuses on the mastery of design principles and skills necessary for a career in print and interactive media such as advertising, entertainment and publishing. The junior students learn basic drawing for layout and illustration, color theory, typography, graphic design, employability skills, and the Adobe Creative Suite computer applications: PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator through class instruction and projects. The senior year students continue skill enhancement by developing portfolios for college and employment, as well as web applications including Flash and DreamWeaver. Emphasis is placed on communication and presentation skills, the design process, and leadership skills that transfer to todays design field. Job exploration opportunities and community design activities are available senior year.

two-year course will be prepared to enter a program at a
two-year technical college or a four-year college or university
for a major(s) in Computer Science or in Information Systems.
Students will be exposed to many different programming languages
and design and will gain the necessary skills to implement
computer systems and software, provide technical assistance, and
manage information systems. Skills needed to acquire
certifications and successfully complete the AP Computer Science
Exam will be an integral part of this program. A strong
foundation will also be provided for the student who is
interested in pursuing an MCSD certification. Students will be
eligible to receive college credit upon successful completion of
the program and will be well prepared for further study within
the programming strand of computer science

Information Technologies I

Students will be provided with training in the architecture,
maintenance and repair, basic networking architecture, and
upgrading of personal computer systems. This training is
designed to prepare students for the COMP TIA A+ certification.
The A+ certification is a recognized worldwide as a standard of
competence in microcomputers support. This certification
indicates that the students have the level of understanding
necessary to install, service, and support microcomputers and
peripheral devices. Many companies consider certification of
high value in evaluating potential employees. This hands on
course I designed to provide the information and experience
needed for students to service and maintain personal computers.
Course requires three periods per day in schedule.
Students who attain the A+ certification by passing the CompTIA
tests are awarded 3 credit hours at any state funded college or
university in Ohio.
Information Technologies II

Fee: Approximately $125.00
This is the logical stepping-stone to follow the A+
certification prep course. This course is designed as a complete
package to prepare students for the COMP TIA Network+ and the
National Association of Communications Systems Engineers (NACSE)
NACSE Associate Network Specialist certifications. This course
will provide students with a strong foundation in PC-based
network software and hardware components. The course is set as a
path for students to enter a networking career or to continue
their education in a computer or telecommunications field.
Course requires three periods per day in schedule.
Students who attain the Network+ certification by passing the
CompTIA test are awarded 3 credit hours at any state funded
college or university in Ohio.

INTERACTIVE MEDIA/GRAPHIC DESIGN

Interactive Media I -
Juniors 2 credits
Experience visual literacy through Interactive Media. Visual
literacy is the ability to create, use, interpret, and
appreciate images. The Interactive Media class is available to
give all students an opportunity to explore and become
knowledgeable designers and producers of visual information.
Create captivating graphics using the powerful Adobe Create
Suite software collection used by professional designers. The
course is designed to give students experience using state of
the art design applications while learning elements and
principles of design. Students will experience the creation of a
wide variety of images - from eye catching logos, to the
riveting images in magazines, to the enlightening info graphics
found in newspapers, to web page designs. After completing the
Interactive Media course, students are encouraged to apply their
skills in other classes like journalism, yearbook, and
broadcasting.
The second Interactive Media
class will continue preparing students with 21st century skills
for those interested in pursuing a career in visual
communications. The class advances further into the digital
communications realm by exploring Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash to
creating web pages, animations and other interactive designs.
Students will continue developing a mastery of Adobe PhotoShop,
Illustrator and InDesign while designing the graphics that will
go into their interactive projects.

Video Production I 2

This course targets students interested in careers in film and
television. Students learn all aspects of production in Hoovers
state-of-the-art studio facility; including video camera
operation, sound production, and lighting technique. VPI is a
hands-on, project-based learning environment where students work
individually, and in groups to create projects including TV
shows, short films, and commercials. The class also performs
technical duties on district entertainment and sports programs
broadcast to the community via the educational access cable
channel. Students learn industry-standard software such as Avid
XPress Pro and Photoshop. This course requires student
participation beyond the regular school day.
Note: The Intro to Film//Television course is not a
pre-requisite for Video Productions, however, preference will be
given to successful completers when applying for the Video
Production I program.

This multi-award-winning program builds on the foundation of
knowledge learned in VPI by offering students the opportunity to
specialize in more advance industry standard production
techniques. Advanced production projects include a daily
newscast, documentaries, short films, music videos, and various
projects for outside clients. Students apply advanced techniques
using Avid, Photoshop and After Effects. VPII students must
demonstrate maturity and a strong desire to work independently
from the Instructor on both class-related projects and on the
district/community programs. This course requires student
participation beyond the regular school day.

emphasizes the development of digitally generated or computer
enhanced media. Students will use multi-media technology to
develop products for business, training, entertainment,
communications and marketing. The students will be able to
attain employment in the following professional computer
careers: Web Designer, Multimedia Specialist, Interactive
Digital Media Specialist, Graphic Designer and Instructional
Designer.

both MAC and PC environments. Advanced Writing (Grade 12) is a
required course for senior Interactive Media students. This
English course is designed to develop writing and other
communication skills necessary for success in Interactive Media
careers.

During year one students will
gain hands-on theater-tech experience by working with operating,
and performing maintenance on light and sound boards and
lighting fixtures, light and sounds design is also included in
year one. Year two will focus on applying the skills learned in
year one to video production. Students will learn how to light a
set, operate video equipment and edit digital video and audio.
This program utilizes a working knowledge of basic physics and
science which is applied to learning sound and lighting design.
Students will learn how to operate sound and light consoles, how
to troubleshoot basic light and sound problems and how to set up
and maintain light and sound equipment. Hands-on lessons will be
taught in a theatre/auditorium environment so that students can
receive authentic theatre tech experience.

Video Production prepares
students for a variety of careers in the areas of Video
Production instrumentation's, regulation and compliance. This
program will provide students with hands-on experience with
professional television production/video equipment and digital
editing systems. Students will learn skills and techniques from
behind and in front of the camera that include news broad casts,
sporting events, and entertainment productions. They will study
film, lighting camera operation and sound as part of this
program. This program does require participation in a flexible
schedule outside of the school day to cover real-world events.

The Cisco Networking program is affiliated with the internationally-known Cisco Networking Academy and is housed at Fairless High School. This comprehensive program prepares students for careers in Information Technology, with specialization in networking skills.
Through the academy, web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, and preparation for industry standard certifications are provided—all skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond! Students learn about the design, planning, implementation, operation, and troubleshooting of wired and wireless networks.
